Alan Mathison Turing (1912 – 1954) was an English mathematician and logician who made significant contributions in the fields of mathematics, cryptanalysis, logic, philosophy and computer science.
Turing is famously considered to be the forefather of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. Turing worked as a codebreaker during World War II and helped to breaking the German ‘enigma’ by devising a systematic method for breaking messages encrypted by the Nazi cipher machine. This work is commemorated in the film ‘The Imitation Game’ – with Benedict Cumberbatch playing Turing.
Despite his accomplishments, Turing was never fully recognised in his home country during his lifetime, due to his homosexuality, which was then a crime in the UK.
