Albert Einstein (1879 – 1955) was a German theoretical physicist who developed the theory of relativity, one of the two pillars of modern physics (alongside quantum mechanics). Einstein is widely regarded as the most influential physicist of the 20th century.

His work is also known for its influence on the philosophy of science. He is best known to the general public for his mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2, which has been dubbed “the world’s most famous equation”.

Einstein won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921 for his discovery of the photoelectric effect, which is the understanding of light as being able to function both as a wave and a stream of particles.
