Viktor Emil Frankl (1905 – 1997) was an Austrian neurologist, psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor. His most famous work is his book Man’s Search for Meaning which documents his experiences in the concentration camps of the Holocaust, and his views on the importance of finding personal meaning in even the most brutal experiences.

He is also the founder of logotherapy, which is premised on man’s underlying motivator in life being a “will to meaning”, even in the most challenging circumstances. Frankl found that fellow victims of the Holocaust who did not lose their sense of purpose and meaning in life were able to survive longer in the concentration camps than those who did.
