Pope Saint John Paul II (1920 – 2005) served as Pope and sovereign of the Vatican City State from 1978 to 2005. In this position, he was bishop of Rome and head of the Roman Catholic Church.
He is called Saint John Paul the Great by some Catholics. He was elected by the second Papal conclave of 1978, which was called after Pope John Paul I, who had been elected in August to succeed Pope Paul VI, died after thirty-three days.
He was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years and the first from a Slavic country.
