J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904 – 1967) was an American theoretical physicist and professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley. Oppenheimer was director of the Los Alamos Laboratory and was responsible for the initial research and design of the atomic bomb as a member of the Manhattan Project.
The atomic bombs designed by Oppenheimer and his Manhattan Project were used in the 1945 bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which marked the end of the second World War.
